Former forwarding agent jailed one day for bribery

SHAH ALAM (March 26, 2012): A former forwarding agent was sentenced to a day in jail and fined RM5,000 by the Sessions Court, here today after pleading guilty to attempting to give RM5,000 in cash to a Customs officer five years ago.
Judge Asmadi Hussin also ordered M. Asitambi, 47, to serve six months in jail if he failed to pay the fine.
Asitambi was charged with attempting to give RM5,000 in cash to Azman Jusoh as an inducement to settle an offence committed which was making an incorrect declaration, which was an offence under Section 133(1)(a) of the Customs Act 1965.
He was charged with committing the offence at Restoran Briyani King, Jalan Sri Sarawak 18, Taman Seri Andalas, Klang, at about 8.40pm on July 20, 2007.
He was charged under Section 214 of the Penal Code which provides for a maximum fine of RM500,000 or five years' imprisonment or both.
Prosecuting Officer Mahamad Sukri Abu Seman from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission appeared for the prosecution while the accused was represented by counsel Afifuddin Hafifi. -- Bernama
